A top US military general has said that the United States would not be able its objectives in Afghanistan without a change of behavior by its neighbor Pakistan.
"It is unacceptable that Pakistan provides sanctuary, and we ought to bring the full weight of the U.S. government and our coalition partners on Pakistan to ensure that they do not provide the sanctuary that they have provided historically to groups like Haqqani and the Taliban," General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told U.S. lawmakers this week.
Pakistan is under pressure by U.S. for continuing to harbor militant groups which launch attacks in Afghanistan, though Islamabad rejects the allegations.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned that Pakistan could lose major non-NATO ally status if Islamabad doesnt crack down on militant groups.
Meanwhile, Pakistans top diplomat has said that his countrys assistance to U.S. in Afghanistan was a "mistake."
Back in the 1980s, "we made a wrong choice... and then after 9/11 we again became a conduit of American effort in Afghanistan," Pakistans Foreign Minister Khwaja Asif told Russia Today. "Today, [when] we look back in hindsight, [we] can say in full confidence it was a mistake."
